Choose and Cut a Christmas Tree on a NC Mountain Roadtrip

Looking for a new holiday tradition? North Carolina produces over 20% of America’s real Christmas trees! With most of our farms located in the cool mountains, there’s an obvious road trip opportunity. With their ancient slopes and charming little towns, the NC mountains are a perfect place to get in the holiday spirit…especially if you come home with a tree!

What Do You Need?

Before you go, you should probably know how you’re getting the tree home. You can strap it on the roof without a luggage rack, but it’s obviously much easier with one…and safer. Rope or bungee cords will do just fine. Make sure you put a towel underneath to protect your paint, and make sure the top of the tree is at the front.

If you have a pickup truck, bear in mind that most truck beds are around 5-6 feet long, and you can safely overhang about one or two feet. And always tie it down. The roads from our suggested destinations are quite twisty, and you don’t want an eight foot monster fir flying across the highway.

Where to Go?

It depends on how far you want to drive! Boone is your closest major stop, at about two and a half hours from Sanford. This charming college town is home to plenty of great restaurants and activities, perfect to round out your day. On the way up on US-421, the Christmas tree farms are impossible to miss, with nearly a dozen within spitting distance of downtown Boone.

Asheville is a bit further – three and a half hours – but is also much larger, with a thriving downtown arts scene and a huge number of breweries. It’s also known for the Biltmore Estate, a sprawling mansion built by the Vanderbilts during the Gilded Age. Like Boone, Christmas tree farms abound on the mountainsides.

If you’re not up for a trip to the mountains, you can still find a choose and cut farm near you! The NC Christmas Tree Association has a handy locator available on their website.

With its convenient location near Raleigh, Sanford, NC offers easy access to both the Blue Ridge Mountains and the coast! Autumnwood is one of the area’s newest neighborhoods, and offers beautiful rural living with convenience to the Research Triangle Park, Downtown Durham, and other area attractions.
