Sanford is located in the geographic center of one of the most progressive and fastest growing areas of the United States. We’re 20 minutes to Apex, 20 minutes to Fayetteville, and 22 minutes to I-540. We’re 42 minutes to Research Triangle Park, 55 minutes to Fort Bragg, and 60 minutes to Greensboro. As you may have surmised, we’re in the heart of our great state. We’re proud to be known for our historic architecture, effervescent arts scene, and first class recreation. Read on for a little history and fun facts about our town.

Originally the crossing of two rail lines in tobacco-growing Central North Carolina, where the white sand of our beaches encounters the red clay of the Piedmont, Sanford was incorporated in 1874. The town was named in honor of Colonel Charles O. Sanford, a railroad civil engineer influential in the construction of those initial rail lines. The surrounding area was later designated as Lee County. Sanford has continued to be a thriving railroad and industrial center. In fact, today Sanford is known as one of the largest producers of brick and pottery products in the United States, with a robust manufacturing base, highly rated student-centered schools, and quality healthcare.

Sanford is home to four National Register Historic Districts, Downtown Sanford, Rosemount McIver Park, Hawkins Avenue, and Lee Avenue, as well as two Local Historic Districts, Downtown Sanford and Rosemount McIver Park. These districts contain excellent examples of late nineteenth and early twentieth century designs; historic homes in the area primarily showcase Late Victorian, Queen Anne, Craftsman Bungalows, and Tudor Revival styles.

For those with an appreciation for the arts, Sanford is the place to be, with venues including Temple Theatre/Carolina’s Center for the Performing Arts, Lee County Arts and Community Center, and a 1.3 mile public art trail complete with murals in Downtown Sanford. The Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra was founded in Sanford over 25 years ago, delighting audiences across the state, and Sanford is host to the annual celebrations of Broadway Our Way and the Sanford Arts & Vine Festival.

Sanford’s easy-going year round climate allows for a plethora of outdoor pursuits. Nearby Deep River and Jordan Lake provide wonderful settings for recreational activities such as water skiing, kayaking, camping, and picnicking. Biking, hiking, and strolling is a favorite pastime at the 177-acre San Lee Park and Bicycle Trail, while championship golf is available on multiple scenic area links, with Pinehurst greens just a few miles away.

Spend a day in Sanford and you’ll see why we chose this special town as home to Autumnwood.
